Week of November 13- Postmodern & Global Art : Video Art and Performance Art- Bill Viola

Bill Viola is one of the most famous artist in the world and could also be called the video art inventor. Viola has created many installations, sound environments, video films, etc. Such works have been used as a way of creating a personal voyage to the visitors. Meaning that whatever they see and feel connected to will exhibit a much more profound meaning. Viola’s goal is to create an internal world and a personal voyage where the visitor is submerged into the metaphysical world. When talking about the metaphysical word as the different stages of his work which are Who am I? Where I am? and Where am I going?. Viola’s speciality is to develop a work that would incite metaphysical interrogations for his visitors by not resembling a classroom because he wants to preserve the world that art provoke. In fact Viola’s clarity and awareness present questions of the human conditions but the way he does is in a completely different way by exhibiting metaphysical interrogations through his works of art.

Artist interview from the Art 21 website and write a summary of their work on your blog-OCT30

In the interview of the artist Keltie Ferris, she describes her new series of abstract paintings in her Bushwick, Brooklyn studio. Ferris describes her paintings as something that is seeing through to other worlds of hiding and exposing. Something that is abstract, something that is hard to express and at the same time unnameable. Ferris talks about how she connects to the world while working alone. Solitude for her is a way of getting close together with her inner self. Being by herself and painting at the same time is some type of technique that enables her to experience both pleasure and anxiety, while working in solitude. In fact, Ferris finds inspiration in books and urban environments. Ferris also situates her works of art in an art historical tradition by applying oil paint with a variety of techniques such as using brush, palette knife, and a spray gun and ends up building up layers of marks over various weeks into complex patterns and shapes. Describing her work of art as an abstraction that is about “trying to undo the nameable things in life”.

Take home part of Final Test Essay

At the PS1 Moma museum trip there were a lot of different works of art that caught my attention but this work of art by Gina Beavers, Love Yourself, acrylic on canvas, 2015 made me think about the importance of having self-confidence and loving yourself. This work of art resembles a person’s navel framed by hands that form a heart-shape around the exposed belly and hands touching their own body that in fact can not only represent loving yourself but also portrays the vivid image when you look at yourself in the mirror and realize that what you got in front of you it's you, and you are supposed to love yourself for who you are. It can represent both the security and insecurity of many individuals when it comes to self-loving. Sometimes a person might feel intimidated of his or her own body, some don’t even like it. This is why this painting shows hands touching their own body. It can also reflect the importance of the saying that demands to “Love yourself first in order to make someone love you”. The artwork is in fact totally creative and what also grabs my attention is the fact that Beavers’ work shows a body that is formed in paint, which is an artificial body. However, the most interesting fact is how the paint is just paint and artificial, yet the body resembles a vivid image of an alive body. Also, the rough texture used in the surface of the painting contributes immensely when showing the vivid body on the painting. Hands touching their own body can have a millions of strange effects and feelings on human beings.

Another work of art that grabbed my attention from the PS1 Moma museum trip was Lobster Roll, 2012, Acrylic on canvas by Gina Beavers. This painting is not only connected to the millions of pictures uploaded on the famous application instagram and the famous phrase on a hashtag as #Foodporn. It has some type of connection to what our word is becoming today but also her work is impeccable because Beaver, not only paints but uses a base for the image and uses some sort of thickening rough texture that represent the different shapes that she is building. The things that most catches my attention is the fact that when her painting is hanging in the wall looks so real and due to the rough texture used when designing it, her work has a lumpy look and a physical quality that makes you want to devour what is in front of you.

Bruce Nauman,

Bruce Nauman is an inspiring American Artist that is known for creating his unique styles of  sculpture, photography, neon, video drawing and performance. Nauman was born on December 6, 1941 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Nauman studied mathematics and physics at the University of Wisconsin–Madison (1960–64), and art with at the University of California, Davis (1965–6). In 1964 he gave up painting to dedicate himself to sculpture, performance and cinema collaborations with William Allan and Robert Nelson. He worked as an assistant to Wayne Thiebaud. Upon graduation (MFA, 1966), he taught at the San Francisco Art Institute from 1966 to 1968, and at the University of California at Irvine in 1970. In 1968 he met the singer and performance artist Meredith Monk and signed with the dealer Leo Castelli. Nauman further moved to Pecos, New Mexico. In 1989, he established a home and studio in Galisteo, New Mexico, where he continues to work and live along with his wife, the painter Susan Rothenberg. Nauman also seems to be fascinated by the nature of communication and language’s inherent problems, as well as the role of the artist as supposed communicator and manipulator of visual symbols.
Since the mid-1980s, primarily working with sculpture and video, Nauman has developed disturbing psychological and physical themes incorporating images of animal and human body parts. In 1988, after a hiatus of nearly two decades focused on time-based media, he resumed his work with cast objects. One of his best-known pieces from this period is "Window or Wall Sign," a neon spiral with the words "The true artist helps the world by revealing mystic truths." About this time he began experimenting with sound in spaces and soon embarked on using holography. Gradually, Nauman built a reputation as an exciting new experimental artist.

Museum Essay 20th Century Art-

This art-work was created by a guy called Juan Gris. Juan Gris was a spanish painter and sculpter who lived and worked in Madrid. The painting above, is called Guitar and Glass. This art-work was created in the yea 1914. The form of art used in this painted which juan used is called cubism. Cubism was one of the first truly modern movements that made art more visible. Cubism was developed by famous historical artists called Pablo Picasso and Georges Branques, with their revolutionary style of modern art. Pablo and Georges both believed that creativity was the right way to go and doing things “outside the box” by using geometric 3 dimensional shapes. In this painting , juan used a total of 4 colors with 1 of them happen to be with different contrasts. This painting shows a oval shaped figure with diamond shapes in the interior with black and grey colorings. The image happen to illustrate a sort of illusion with it , combining a guitar with a table. The painting shows glass witch appears to be the oval shape because you can see through it which shows a music note.

This artwork was created by an artist named Franz Kline. Franz painted this during the period of the the Vietname War in the year of 1954. The form of art Franz used for this painting is called Abstract Impressionism. Abstract Expressionism was never an idea label for the movement which grew up in New York in the 1940's and 1950'5, Although it started in the post-World War 2 art movement in American art. Most of the artists associated with Abstract Expressionism matured in the 1930s. They were influenced by the era's leftist politics, and came to value an art grounded in personal experience. Abstract Impressionism is the form of art that avoid the status quo of what an artist should do or how the art is made,They broke the barriers and helped new artist take chances and discover the possibility of being different and thinking “outside the box”. This painting illustrates a shadow like black paint, basically dried off to demostrate the change of color. In my opinion, This painting shows a person siting either on a chair or on one of the sticks as showed. Looking into a telescope or even on a desk doing some type of work.

-Professor i was not able to attach my sketch of the paintings so i will show you on you/re next lecture.

Renaissance & Baroque Art 1 Page Essay

Renaissance & Baroque

In the renaissance styles were in fact different then the Baroque styles. The Renaissance style was brought up during the 14th century and ended around the early 17th century. The Renaissance styles were viewed and recognized throughout the world from its unique sense of differentiation of the way painters painted  from before the renaissance and after the renaissance. Renaissance art was mainly created by Italian scholars to arouse the historical achievements of the Roman and Greek culture. On the other hand, Barouque style became popular on 1600, and ended by 1750. Techniques mainly  used throughtout this time period, painters  enhanced where the use of composition, scale, the use of lighting and many more. Baroque art started in Italy, it also started with religion (catholic church). The style made the religious painting more inspiring.

This Renaissance painting was created by Paolo Veronese. This painting described to be a wedding at venice , showing Jesus in the middle. At this biblical wedding at Cana, Jesus was going to conduct his first miracle to turn water into wine. This painting is shown to have sort oh sharp tone to it to show the dramatic sense of each person doing something.

Wedding at Cana by Paolo Veronese

This Baroque painting was created by Josefa de Obides. In this photo in fact displays a great detail of light and shadow to enhance the drama to the time setting and the new born baby. The color signifies the time frame as well.

1. As stated in the lecture, there are many ways artists unify their artwork to show symbolism and visuality. Individuality is a way artists unify their art work to show their differneciality and way of mind set then others, Some ways artists unify their art work is by the color they apply on their work how repetition of the color, shape , size and image. Artists show unity in their art by the combination and repetition of color and shape to resemble a fine work of art or symbolization.

An example of how this artwork is unified. This is an artwork by Alex Grey, the unification of this piece of art comes from the combination of a human and space. This shows how the human mind resembles, the mind itself can receive and release infinite ideas as how space/ galaxy is infinite symbolizing unity.

2.There are many artists that use asymmetric balance to form their art work. Asymmetrical balance is basically means no symmetry , meaning it has nothing to do with balance nor mirror image is shown. However, in an Asymmetrical balance artwork the elements are displayed so there can be a sense of balance shown. As seen in this art work , asymmetric balance is displayed by the shapes and colors being similar to show a sense of balance,  but overal it has no balance nor reflection to show symmtry.

3. Scale is relation of one thing to another, the exaggeration in size.  Scale can change the meaning of an artwork due to the way people acknowledge and admiring the art work by the way it is itself and its originality. For example this image shows how scale can change the meaning of an art work by its exaggeration in size, people not used to seeing an object that size.

Brian Echeverria

HUA 101 ASSIGNMENT #1

The qualities of the Egyptian, greek and roman styles shown in the online lecture all show symbolism and imagery on the history of these countries. In the video showed a map of ancient Egypt and the speaker described the area being surrounded by deserts. These deserts has not changed and had a consist style over the last twenty five hundred years. The map also provided a crucial role to the civilization back then to travel to their destination for needs.
The map is seen to be a historical map used in ancient times, it symbolizes the difference of times, shape and color people used to create a map back then. Another style shown in the video symbolizing ancient Egyptian Greek times is statue figures of two ancient king and queen, the queen holding on to the king,  symbolizing quality and strength. Both standing in a specific position showing quality of ancient time civilization. Another sculpture shown in the video shows a portrait drawing of a family, Mother , Father and three of their babies. The mother in the portrait supposedly was one of the most beautiful women in their times. The couple also ruled ancient Egypt from 1352 to 1336 BC and was know from a religious revolution that worshiped one god only. Analyzing the ancient portrait myself i can describe life in that time was not as stressful as life in present time. Both parents taking care of their babies showing them love and power. I see the sun shining towards them symbolizing positive towards them.

A little about me,  my name is Brian i go to Laguardia Community College, im athletic (play soccer and basketball) im 6'3 feet tall and I also like to travel .
